The current meaning of life for the average human is basically to increase their oxytocin levels, (increase level of satisfaction).The way in which that occurs is through currency. That is the reason people go through school to get an education, and eventually get a (hopefully) good job. You get more money, you exchange it for usable goods, then are happy about it, rinse and repeat.
What is money? It is worthless matter. You obtain as much of that useless matter as you can, to exchange it with some slightly useful matter (car, house, etc) , and thus get an increase in oxytocin.
That is what leads the decisions of humanity currently, and is what holds back progression (religion also does, but that is a different matter). The average human being is ignorant, and blissfully unaware of how much more there is to their existence.
